방탄소년단(이하 방탄)의 예술 작품을 알고 있는 사람들이라면 그들이 늘 컨셉 앨범의 형태로 음반을 발매한다는 사실도 알고 있을 것입니다. 각각의 앨범에는 특별한 이야기가 담겨 있고, 그 이야기에는 의미와 해석의 여지가 겹겹이 숨어있습니다. 방탄이 자신들의 음악세계를 통해 그간 전해온 메시지는 깊은 층위에 관계하면서 동시에 실생활과 맞닿아 있었습니다. 그들은 그것을 전달하기 위해 다양한 방법을 시도해 왔고, 가사, 뮤직비디오, 퍼포먼스 이외에도 철학자들뿐 아니라, 작가와 고대의 신화들, 명화 등을 인용했습니다. 이렇게 영상 속 숨은 의미들과 해석의 여지들은 한 데로 결합되어 팬들의 해독을 기다리고 있습니다. 방탄의 뮤직비디오들은 서로 연결되고, 상징적이고 수수께끼 같기로 유명합니다. 하지만 다행히 여기엔 일정한 패턴이 있습니다. 모든 비디오에서 공통적으로 반복되는 어떤 장면들이 있는데요, 이 상징적인 장면들은 해석이 가능할 뿐 더러, 스크린 너머의 메시지를 이해하는데 중요한 단서가 되기도 합니다.
이 영상은 방탄의 뮤직비디오들 안에서 발견되는 장면들의 반복성과 장면들 간의 유사성을 토대로 한 것입니다. 이 작업은 어떤 이성적인 설명을 제공하기보다는 거의 모든 뮤직비디오에서 이러한 반복적, 상징적 패턴을 보이는 장면들을 찾아낸 후 유사한 법칙들을 따라 한데 모아보고자 하는 시도에서 시작되었습니다.
소박하고 안전한 어린이의 상태에서 유혹과 반항, 그리고 고뇌로 가득 찬 젊음, 그리고 또 자아성찰과 스스로도 낯선 자신의 어느 부분들 과의 조우까지 – 방탄의 비디오들은 자기애(self-love)와 개성화(individuation)에 이르는 길로 우리를 이끄는 듯 보입니다.

Those who know BTS artistic work will also know that their albums have a theme. Every album has a specific story, and many layers of meanings and interpretations.
Their messages had always been very deep, and connected to life, and BTS convey them by through various means: lyrics, music videos, performances, but also references to philosophers, authors, ancient myths, paintings, and more. All these means and references combine together and wait to be deciphered by their fans.
Many BTS music videos are known for being linked to each other, for being symbolic and sometimes very cryptic. But there is a pattern. There are some repetitive scenes, that can be found throughout almost all their videos. These symbolic scenes can be interpreted, and are the key to understanding the message behind the screen.
All these means and references combine together and wait to be deciphered by their fans.

I built this video based on the repetition and the similarity of these scenes. My intent, rather than to provide a rational explanation, was to dissect almost every BTS video in search of those scenes, and put them together following the similarity principle. From the idyllic and protected state of childhood, to the temptations, rebellion and suffering of youth, to the self-reflection and the encounter with those parts of ourselves that are foreign to us, it seems that BTS videos always lead to the path towards self-love and individuation.
