SUITE FOR ARMY, BTS Medley, Henry Cheng
서울과 베를린을 기반으로 활동하는 지휘자 겸 작곡가 헨리청은 BTS의 음악에서 지속적으로 발견되는 클래식 음악 요소와 아미가 함께해 온 음악적 여정에 대한 연구를 바탕으로 아미를 위한 클래식 음악 모음곡 “Suite for ARMY”를 작곡했다. 이 곡은 제3회 BTS 국제 학술대회 특별전으로 서울 토탈미술관에서 열리는 비욘드 더 씬 ‘Beyond the Scene’ 전시회 테마곡으로 헌정되었다.
“Suite for ARMY” is a classically composed work derived from the musical analysis of BTS’ complete discography and research into their classical influences. Its name pays homage to the ARMY and gives form to the piece while the interwoven movements and themes chronical the philosophical and personal developments of BTS & ARMY. On July 2nd, as a Special Exhibition of the 3rd BTS Global Interdisciplinary Conference, it was dedicated to the opening day of the <Beyond the Scene> exhibition at the Total Museum of Art.

클래식 음악의 영향은 BTS 음악 안에 다양하게 녹아져 있다. Fake Love, 피 땀 눈물, Euphoria 곡에서 찾을 수 있는 쇼팽의 이별의 왈츠, 바흐의 나단조 미사곡, 드뷔시의 피아노 곡 달빛, 그리고 벅스테후드의 파스칼리아 등의 원곡을 직간접적으로 인용, 기존 BTS 곡의 멜로디와 오가는 형식을 취했다. BTS의 대표곡 10곡 속 주제와 음악적 메시지, 철학, 작곡 기법과 연결되는 클래식 음악가인 바그너, 차이콥스키, 라흐마니노프와 스트라빈스키의 음악을 더했다.
Classical music’s influence on BTS can be heard directly – in Fake Love, Blood Sweat and Tears and Euphoria, the band quotes Chopin’s “Farewell” Waltz Op. 69 No. 1, Bach’s Mass in B minor – Kyrie, Debussy’s Clair de Lune, and Buxtehude’s Passacaglia. The Suite for ARMY takes these direct quotes from Chopin and Bach while using Debussy and Buxtehude as inspiration for orchestration and color. The philosophical beliefs, compositional techniques, and personal stories of Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Mahler, and Stravinsky are the sonic glue that binds BTS and Classical Music.
헨리 청, 지휘자/작곡가
헨리 청은 베를린과 서울에서 활동하는 지휘자이자 작곡가로 유럽 연합 지휘 콩쿠르와 안탈 도라티 국제 지휘 콩쿠르에서 1위를 수상했다. 2017년부터 독일 뒤스부르크에 있는 클랑크라프트 오케스트라의 수석 지휘자이자 예술 감독을 역임했으며, 최근에는 LA 필하모닉, 애틀랜타 발레단, 라 스칼라 체임버 오케스트라를 비롯한 유럽과 미국의 오케스트라, 발레, 오페라 하우스와 정기적으로 협력하고 있다. 이스트만 음악 대학(Eastman School of Music), 조지아 주립 대학(Georgia State University), 인디아나 대학(Indiana University), 베를린 예술대학(University of Arts, Berlin (UdK))에서 수학했다. 헨리 청은 미국 뉴욕 햄튼 뮤직 페스티벌 다원예술 프로그램의 공동 큐레이터이자, 그의 아내인 큐레이터 죠앤 킴과 함께 2017년에 시작한 넌센스 뮤직 페스티벌의 공동 설립자이다.
Conductor Henry Cheng is the 1st prize winner of the European Union Conducting Competition and the Antal Dorati International Conducting Competition. Since 2017, he has served as the Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Klangkraft Orchester in Duisburg and regularly works with orchestras, ballets and operas in Europe and America including most recently the LA Philharmonic, Atlanta Ballet and the La Scala Chamber Orchestra. His musical education includes masterclasses with Riccardo Muti, Bernard Haitink, Kurt Masur, and Tugan Sokhiev in addition to studies at Eastman School of Music, Georgia State University, Indiana University, and University of Arts, Berlin (UdK).
His most recent exhibitions include the art direction and musical composition of the documentary film “Time Pt. 1 & Pt 2” at the S&N Running Learning Center commissioned by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the sound work “Berlin” with curator Li Zhenhua for the BEING museum in Shanghai, and collaborations with performance artist Ming Wong -“Rhapsody in Yellow” co-commissioned by the Singapore Art Museum and the Steirischer Herbst Festival.
He is the co-curator of interdisciplinary programming at The Hamptons Festival of Music and co-founder of the “Non-Sense” Music Festival with his wife Joanne Kim.
