문형민은 회화에서부터 사진, 설치, 조각은 물론 이번 전시에서 선보이는 데이터베이스 영상작업 같은 다양한 매체를 사용한다. 그의 작업은 처음에는 현란한 색과 날카로운 표면의 디자인적 요소들로 눈을 끌지만 표면 밑의 주제들은 다양한 사회적 관점에 대한 질문이다. ‘형식과 내용의 모순’을 바탕으로 평 소에 당연하다고 생각하는 제도나 관습, 정보들에 대해 우리가 어떻게 반응하고 있는가를 관찰하고, 다 른 관점에서 보면 벌어지는 간극에 대해 질문한다.

<by numbers series : Beyond the Scene>은 이번 전시를 위해 새롭게 프로그램 된 작업이다. 이 작업에서 메인 컴퓨터는 2022년 6월 1일 이후 매시간 접속하여 10개국의 언론사 사이트들에 매시 간 접속하여 이번 전시를 위해 선택한 키워드: bts ARMY가 포함된 기사를 수집하고 있다. 수집된 데이터는 기사에서 가장 많이 등장한 단어와 보도사진 중 10개의 색을 찾아내 자동적으로 순위를 정한다. 이를 바탕으로 완성된 단어와 색채의 조합은 26개의 모 니터에서 데이터로 송출되며 새로운 데이터가 입력되어 분석될 때마다 작업은 새로운 조합으로 현재 진행형으로 계속 변화한다. 

MOON Hyungmin has concentrated on various media art works. His works attract attention with vivid colors and keen design sense in it. The artist pursues formal completeness but, at the same time, his works indirectly express social-level ideas that go beyond simple and formative-level ideas or individual taste. In other words, Moon’s works are of modernism and aestheticism in their formative frame work, but the message underneath it is rather social. Through such contradiction or co-existence between the form and content, he switches social issues with communication or signs, which are generally considered “clear,” into “unclear” and “obscure” issues. In the meantime, he puts “unclear” personal sense or experiences into the “clear” domain of sign. In Moon’s works, “specialty and universality” and “individual and society” interwind and infiltrate one another.

<by numbers series: Beyond the Scene> is a newly programmed work for this exhibition. The central computer of the work accesses ten media sites in various countries every hour to collect articles containing the keywords for this exhibition: <BTS ARMY>. The collected data is analyzed in real-time by the central computer and ranks the ten most frequently used words. At the same time, the ten colors most commonly used in the photographs used in each article are found and ranked. Colors from the collected data are distributed according to word frequency across 27 monitors.
