언어는 인간이 세계의 혼돈 속에서 길을 찾고 앞으로 나아가게 하는 빛입니다. 언어에 기대어 우리는 망각과 소멸의 운명에 맞서고 영원을 바라볼 수 있습니다. 숱한 결함과 배신에도 불구하고 언어가 없는 우리의 삶은 곧바로 폭력과 어리석음의 나락으로 무너져 내릴 것입니다. 언어는 우리를 인간으로 살아가게 하는, 우리가 발 딛고 있는 기반입니다.

이 프로젝트는 관객과 함께 우리의 삶에서 가장 중요한 의미를 갖는 1000개의 단어를 수집하고, 그것들로 이루어지는 하나의 풍경을 그려내고자 합니다. 당신에게 가장 소중한 말, 당신을 키우고 당신을 지탱해온 단어 하나를 적어주십시오. 이렇게 모인 단어들은 전시가 진행되는 동안 벽에 걸린 금속판 위에 적힐 것이고 지금의 풍경을 조금씩 다른 모습으로 변화시킬 것입니다. 그것은 우리가 소망하는 세상의 풍경이 될 것입니다.

Language is a light that navigates and guides us forward in a chaotic world. With language, we rebel against our fate of oblivion and extinction to seek eternity. We would certainly live in a dark and violent world without language, despite its imperfections and betrayals. Language is a foundation that makes us human.

With your participation in this project, 1,000 most valued words in life will be collected and transformed to create a new landscape. Please write down the most meaningful word in your life, or a word that served as a guide for you. Every word will be engraved on a metal plate during the exhibition, changing the landscape one by one. In the end, we will see the world we all hope for.

안규철은 서울대학교 미술대학에 입학해 조각을 공부했으며, 졸업 후 《계간미술》에 들어가 7년간 기자로 일했다 1985년 무렵 현실과 발언에 참여하면서 당시 조각의 흐름을 거스르는 미니어처 작업을 선보였으며, 1987년 서른셋의 나이에 프랑스 파리로 유학을 떠났다. 이듬해인 1988년 독일로 건너가 슈투트가르트 국립미술학교에서 7년간 수학하던 중 1992년에 스페이스 샘터화랑에서 첫 개인전을 열며 미술가로서 본격적인 활동을 시작했다.

1995년 귀국 이후 《사물들의 사이》, 《사소한사건》, 《49 개의 방》, 《무지개를 그리는 법》, 《모든 것이면서 아무것도 아닌 것》 등 열차례의 개인전을 열고 국내외 여러 기획전, 비엔날레 등에 참여하며 일상적 사물과 공간에 내재된 삶의 이면을 드러내는 작품을 발표해 왔다. 한편 기자 시절부터 시작된 글쓰기는 그의 작품 세계의 중요한 축을 이룬다. 저서 『그림 없는 미술관』, 『그 남자의 가방』, 『테이블(43 Tables)』, 『아홉 마리 금붕어와 먼 곳의 물』은 때로 미술이 포착할 수 없는 진실을 드러내는 현재까지 이어져오는 그의 글쓰기의 산물이다.

Ahn studied sculpture at Seoul National University’s College of Fine Arts. After graduating, he joined The Quarterly Art, where he worked as an editor for seven years. In 1985, he took part in the Reality and Utterance movement and presented miniature works to the public that went against the dominant trend of the times, which tended to feature monumental sculptures. Two years later, he traveled to Paris to study art, and the following year moved to Germany, where he studied at Staatliche Akademie der Bildende künste Stuttgart. While a student there, he took his first steps toward becoming a full-time artist by holding his first solo exhibition at Space Saemteo(Seoul) in 1992.

After returning to Korea in 1995, he held 10 solo exhibitions over the next 19 years, including In Between Objects, Trivialities, Forty-nine Rooms, Drawn to the Rainbow, All And But Nothing, and also took part in numerous special exhibitions and biennales in Korea and overseas as he exposed a different side to life, one hidden in everyday objects and spaces.

Ahn started writing when he was working as a journalist, and this formed an important turning point in his approach to art. From that point on, he became a prolific author and published several books, including Museum without Paintings, The Man’s Suitcase, 43 Tables, Nine Goldfish and Water in the Distance. As many have commented, Ahn’s writing often reveals a truth that cannot be captured in art.
