사람들은 힘들고 지칠 때 푸르른 자연을 통해 위로를 받곤 한다. 그러나 편안하기만 할 것 같은 자연이라는 생태계에도 인간 사회와 비슷한 계급과 경쟁과 도태가 존재한다. 인간보다 더 치열한 삶의 시스템을 자연 속에서 목격하며 나는 이 나무들을 의인화하여 사람들의 욕망에 대한 이야기를 표현하고자 했다.

“무게를 입은 빛”은 욕망의 자아를 실현한 사람에 대한 이야기다. 커다랗게 빛나는 나무 덩어리가 보인다. 나무에는 많은 촛불들이 있고 이 빛은 나무가 결과적으로 얻 어낸 성공을 상징하고 있다. 그리고 주변에 달린 크리스탈은 성공의 빛을 산란시키면서 나무를 더 아 름답게 보이게 한다. 사람들은 성공이라는 한 꼭짓점만 을 생각하지만 사실 성공의 상태를 계속 유 지하는 것. 무거운 책임감과 함께 품위를 지탱하는 것이 얼마나 어려운지 간과한다. 성공의 무게를 잘 견디고 있는 우아한 사람에 대한 이야기를 나무를 통해 표현하고 있다.

원성원은 현실과 공상이 뒤섞인 독특하고 섬세한 사진 콜라주 작업을 진행해 왔다. 작가의 사진은 디지털 작업이긴 하나 일일이 공간과 대상을 촬영한 후 이를 섬세하게 중첩시켜 아날로그적 감수성이 살아있다. 전국 곳곳을 돌아다니며 찍은 사진 소스들을 합성하여 다른 장소, 다른 시간에서 따온 이미지들이 하나의 새로운 스토리를 만들어내기 때문이다. 그러므로 수많은 레이어가 만들어내는 작가 의 사진은 분명한 시각 이미지이지만, 동시에 다양한 이야기이며 그만의 남다른 상상력으로 공간과 인물을 흥미롭게 병치시키며 매력적인 내러티브를 빚어내고 있는 것이다.

It is in nature that we find solace in difficult and exhausting times. Despite its seemingly peaceful appearance, nature also has a hierarchy like that of our society, competition, and those who fall behind. Acknowledging the fierce competition one has to face in nature, I have personified trees to portray a story about human desire.

<Enduring Elegance> portrays the story of a person who has realized their ego of desire. There is a large chunk of tree that is glowing. Several candles are on the tree, symbolizing success. The crystals around the tree diffuse the light of success, illuminating the tree’s beauty. Most people focus on success itself and overlook how difficult it is to maintain status quo, responsibility, and dignity. The tree represents an elegant person who has successfully bore the weight of success.

The works of Won are delicate photo collages that mix reality with imagination. While the photos are digital, they are shot individually at different locations and then combined later, giving the work an analog feel. Photographs taken across Korea—each in a different place and time—are combined to tell an entirely new story. The finished artwork is undoubtedly visual media, but it also conveys multiple stories with an intriguing narrative based on Won’s imaginative placement of characters and backgrounds.
