정연두는 오래전부터 퍼포먼스가 직–간접적으로 등장하는 사진, 영상 등 미디어 작업에 주력하고 있다. 작가는 주로 현대인의 일상에서 작업의 소재를 많이 발견하고, 시각예술과 퍼포먼스의 경계를 넘나들며 본인의 작품 의도를 타인과 공유한다. 사진과 공연적 연출 혹은 영화적 형태로도 보여지는 그의 작업은 현재의 시공간 속에 과거의 이야기를 담아내며, 실제로는 가상이나 현실적으로 있을 법하다고 여길 수 있는 착각을 유발시킨다. 이를 위해 작가는 늘 가장 적합한 미디어를 선택하고자 노력하며, 혹여 자신이 다루고 있는 매체가 다른 분야의 그것 일지라도 본인이 말하고자 하는 핵심을 정확히 표현할 수 있다면 이를 적극적으로 활용하려는 작업 태도를 견지한다.

미토시는 3.11 일본 대지진과 원전 사고가 난지 2년 만에 도시가 완전히 회복되었음을 자축하는 ‘미토 마치나카 페스티벌’을 2013년 8월에 열었다. 이날에 맞추어 작가는 마술사 이은결씨와 함께 마술사와의 산책을 찍는다. 시각장애인 사진가 시라토리 켄지씨의 집 앞에서 그의 마사지숍까지의 거리를 따라가며 찍은 이 영상은, 카메라 앞에서 즉석으로 펼쳐지는 마술사의 신비로운 마술에 매료되다 어느덧 이 카메라의 눈을 통해 바라본 영상이 바로 ‘시각 장애인의 시선’이었음을 인식하게 된다. 이는 볼 수 없음이 곧 존재하지 않는 것은 아니라는 의미를 내포하고 있다. ‘시각 장애인의 시선’이라는 모순은 불가능이란 명제를 가지고 이는 다시 백만 년 넘게 지속되는 방사능 이 2년 만에 회복을 자축하는 축제와 연결된다.

Based in Seoul, JUNG Yeondoo works mainly with performance-based photography, video, and installation. His practice involves discovering a subject matter from the everyday life of today’s people and exploring various possibilities from it. Intersecting memory and representation, reality and fiction, and repeating the other’s reality in various manners, his works uncover the gap of the era. At times crossing over the boundary between fact and fiction, romantically or critically, Jung highlights the essence of art as an illusion by playing out the capitalist society’s fantasies within their subtle difference against the backdrop of reality.

Magician’s Walk (2014) is a 55 minute video produced for Art Tower Mito, Japan. Mito City held the “Mito Machi-Naka Festival” in August 2013 to celebrate the city’s recovery after a major earthquake and nuclear accident from two years before. On this day, the artist filmed ‘Magician’s Walk’, along with the magician, Lee Eun-gyeol. This video was shot along the route of Shiratori Kenji’s daily commute. Shiratori is a blind photographer who sent 80,000 photographs to the artist for a year. The audience, entertained by the magician’s tricks performed in front of the camera, realizes that the camera’s perspective is actually the perspective of Shiratori-san. The magician narrates to and performs illusions for the camera during his stroll that traces the path of Shiratorisan’s daily commute through Mito’s streets. The camera captures the city’s celebration for the recovery of the nuclear disaster in Japan through the perspective of Shiratorisan.
