작가 진영선은 서울대학교 미술대학과 뉴욕 프래트대학원, 영국 왕립 미술학교와 세인트마틴대에서 박사과정을 완료하여 조형예술학 박사학위를 취득한 프레스코 벽화 전문가이다. 1980년대 초 집안현에서 발굴된 고구려고분벽화에 매료되어 파리 에콜데 보자르에서 프레스코 기법을 익히고 1985년에 공간미술관에서 첫 프레스코 개인전을 열었다. 그 후 로마의 ICCROM (국제문화재보수복원연구소)에서 프레스코를 심층적으로 공부한 후 국립중앙박물관 고구려실에 장천 1호 분 벽화를 재현 제작하였다.
앨렌머피갤러리, 뉴욕 스텐달갤러리, 런던 레더비미술관, 칠레 문화의 전당을 비롯해 15회에 이르는 개인전에서 프레스코화를 전시했으며, 1989년 하와이 East-West Center 상주작가로 제퍼슨홀에 프레스코벽화 <Touch of Spring>을 남겼다. 백남준의 비디오 조각과 프레스코화를 공동제작하여 해인사 성보유물박물관에 <해인사 판타지>, 조선관요박물관, 세종문화회관 대극장 로비에 <호랑이는 살아있다>가 소장되어 있다. 대한민국 옥관문화훈장 포장.
프레스코 기법으로 제작된 이 작품은 BTS의 데뷔부터 현재까지, 앨범의 시작과 끝에 담긴 음악 여정 엔솔로지를 예술 아카이브 형식으로 풀어본 작품이다. <SKOOL LUV AFFAIR>부터, “아직 최고의 순간은 오지 않았다”라는 <YET TO COME>에 이르기까지 앨범, 뮤직비디오를 비롯한 다양한 영상들에서 만나는 서사, 상징, 조형적인 언어를 조합하여 새로운 조형 예술의 옷을 입혀본 것이다. 음악, 퍼포먼스와 조형예술의 만남을, 의미와 표현과 아름다움으로 빚어보려는 진지한 모색이다.
프레스코는 전통예술 중에서도 가장 근원적인 전통 예술이다. 프레스코는 돌가루와 석회를 반죽하여 그것을 벽면이나 패널에 발라 평평하게 한 뒤 회가 마르기 전에 그림을 그려 형상과 색채를 석회막 안에 가두어 영구적이게 하는 독특한 매체이다. ‘진짜 프레스코’(true fresco)라고 불리는 이 기법은 1만 5천여 년 전에 제작된 라스코 동굴벽화와 5-6세기의 고구려 고분벽화, 16세기 미켈란젤로의 시스틴 채플의 <天地창조>의 작품의 재료나 기법과 모두 동일하다.
동양 사회에서 병풍 문화가 오랫동안 자리를 잡은 데는 깊은 뜻이 있다. 즉 중요한 뜻이나 사상을 표현한 서화를 늘 가까이 두고 음미한다는 의미에서 생활친화적 예술품이 된 것이다. 병풍은 접었을 때는 그림이 안 보이지만 펼쳐놓을 때의 장관은 하나의 파노라마에 비견될 수 있을 것이다.
이 작품 속에는 지난 9년에 걸친 BTS의 활동 창작물들이 ‘방탄 아카이브’에 가지런히 놓인 채 ‘아직 오지 않은 최고의 순간’을 위해 석회 속에 응고되어 기다리고 있다. 아미들 역시 ‘공감, 연대, 사랑’이라는 망토에 감싸인 채, 침묵 속에서 마음은 맥박을 치고 있으리라 가늠해 본다.
JIN Youngsun studied painting at Seoul National University and Pratt Institute Graduate School of Fine Art in NY and later at Royal College of Art. Jin
attained her PhD from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, London. She was trained as a Fresco Mural artist at the École nationale
supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and at ICCROM Roma which enabled her to reproduce a Goguryeo Tumulus fresco mural for the National Museum of Korea in 1996.
Three collaborative works were done with Nam June Paik’s video sculptures: <Haeinsa Fantasy> in Haeinsa Buddhist Museum; Dome mural for Joseon Royal Kiln Museum; and <Tiger Lives> New Millennium Project, collection of Sejong Cultural Center in Seoul. Jin authored books and articles on fresco art, Goguryeo Murals, and NJP, “Humanized Technology in Nam June Paik’s Art” (Iljogak, 2012) Ok-kwan(Jade) Order of Cultural Merits was conferred by the President of Korea.
This painting, using fresco technique, is an art archive of the musical journey anthology of BTS from the debut to the present. This screen aims to recreate in fine art format the narratives, symbols, and gestures contained in the boys’ albums and music videos from the very early “Skool Luv Affair” to the recent “YET TO COME” which proclaims that their best is yet to be realized.
It is a sincere effort to achieve a union of music, performances, and fine art, to translate temporal beauty into spatial aesthetic.
The art of the fresco is the source of all forms of fine art. After making a paste of stone powder and lime, you spread it evenly on a wall or a panel, and paint when it is wet to trap the colors in the lime for eternity. This technique, called ‘the true fresco’, was used on the wall of the Altamira and Lascaux caves some 15,000 years ago; used in the Goguryeo tumulus murals in the fifth and sixth century; and was used also by Michaelangelo on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the sixteenth century.
There is a good reason why the folding screen was a treasured household item in Asia. Folding screens made it possible for Asians over millennia to keep near them calligraphy or paintings which embodied noble and beautiful precepts. Thus, the message on the screen inspired them and sustained them through vicissitudes of life. The folding screen, when folded, keeps the paintings on it hidden from view, but when fully spread out, opens up a panorama.
In this work, the creations of BTS over the past nine years are captured in lime, waiting for the supreme moment that is yet to come. We, their ARMYs are also waiting for that moment with baited breath, shielding ourselves in the cloak of empathy, alliance, and love.
